Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Implants provided by in Annapolis, MD at

Dental implants are a great way to restore hopeless or missing teeth permanently, but not everyone is a candidate.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

The ideal candidate for dental implants is one with good overall health and healthy gums that wants to replace one or more missing teeth and is willing to undergo a more invasive treatment process. Our dentist can help you with your overall health and gum treatment prior to surgery.

During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Djawdan will assess your current health, medical history, and all potential risk factors to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. Even if you aren't an immediate candidate, there are some treatment options that can set you up for successful implant placement in the future.

Can I Still Get Dental Implants If I'm a Smoker?

The short answer is yes. Although it is possible to place dental implants in a patient who smokes, it is not always guaranteed if the implants will heal successfully. For an implant to be successful, a process called osseointegration (os-e-o-in-tuh-GRAY-shun) needs to occur. This means the dental implant has formed a strong bond within the bone and will provide a solid foundation for the permanent restoration (tooth) to sit on. In patients who smoke, the blood flow is restricted throughout the bone due to nicotine absorption, therefore decreasing the overall health of the bone and the chance for optimal osseointegration.

Even if osseointegration occurs in a patient who smokes, that doesn't always mean that the implants will stay integrated forever. Studies have shown that smoking is directly correlated to marginal bone loss around implants. Once the bone starts to deteriorate, there is no longer a strong foundation for the implant to live, and it will eventually become detached and need to be removed or fall out on its own. Peri-implantitis is also much higher in patients who smoke. This is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of the gum and bone surrounding the implants and can cause implants to fail if not treated at an early stage.

During your consultation we will address potential risk factors associated with your recommended treatment and your lifestyle/health. Due to these potential risks that come with smoking, we highly recommend that patients quit smoking as soon as possible prior to implant surgery. If you are not ready to quit smoking at the time treatment is recommended, we may suggest that you hold off on treatment until you are ready. We do have resources available to aid in smoking cessation if you are interested.

If you would like to discuss your unique treatment options in person, we offer complimentary consultations to explore the treatment that works best for you.
