Annapolis dental patient under oral conscious sedation in dental chairAt Djawdan Center for Implant and Restorative Dentistry, we can prescribe a medication to be taken before you arrive for treatment to help you feel more relaxed.

An oral sedative can reduce anxiety and pain before surgical treatment. Our staff can complete the work needed without the stress of being in the dental chair.

Does having dental work done cause anxiety? We understand. We can help you feel more comfortable and get the necessary work completed. Your oral health is important, we have sedation options that can be taken before you come, are needle free, and can make your time in the chair seem like a dream.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is a prescribed pill or drink that can be given to help a patient feel more relaxed during treatment. It comes with options, we can vary the type of medication given and the level of sedation it will provide. There is not one answer, because there is not just one type of patient. Oral sedation can be prescribed for ranging ages, health status and amount of intensity. The results should include a calming sensation to reduce anxiety and pain. Because the medication can alter perception, we do not advise the patient to drive themselves to or from our office when they have taken an oral sedative.

We prescribe oral sedatives prior to treatments, including the placement of dental implants, for patients who have higher anxiety, or patients who would benefit due to the length or amount of work being completed.

Oral Sedation Benefits

There are many benefits that come from taking an oral sedative prior to your dental treatment, including:
•  Taking the Medication Before Coming: We will provide you with the prescribed medication to take before coming to our office. In some cases, we may even prescribe medication to take the night before to help you get a good night's sleep.
•  Puts You In Control: IV Sedation and inhalants like nitrous oxide are provided over longer spans of time, an oral sedative is taken in one swallow. You know how much is being taken.
•  No Needles: IV Sedation is a wonderful resource, but some patients just can not handle needles. Oral sedatives are needle free.
•  Have More Work Completed in One Visit: If the patient is relaxed and comfortable, we can complete more steps in a single office visit.
•  Amnesic Advantage: Oral sedatives are a conscious sedation, meaning they will not induce sleep, but many patients find that they are so relaxed that they feel so calm that they may sleep and the whole experience feels more like a dream.

Having a healthy mouth is important, we can help you remove the anxieties that can be stopping you from getting the needed work done. Oral sedatives can be used in combination with other sedation methods when needed. We can discuss your options specific to the procedure and your needs.
