If you’re considering sedation dentistry, you’re probably wondering about what to expect and are even a little nervous. Sedation dentistry is a great way to have an intense treatment or procedure completed without having to be put completely under anesthesia. Also this is a great option if you struggle with dental anxiety and would prefer to not be awake and alert during your treatment. If you’re interested in receiving sedation during your next dental appointment, contact the Djawdan Center for Implant and Restorative Dentistry in Annapolis, Maryland.
Is It Safe?
Sedation dentistry is extremely safe. You’re not being placed completely under, as one would expect. Our sedation dentistry is both safe and effective, and an excellent option if you’re afraid of dental procedures. If dental treatment is something that you’re afraid of, then sedation dentistry is a great choice and can definitely make your experience less stressful and anxiety-ridden.
What Types of Sedation are Available?
At the Djawdan Center for Implant and Restorative Dentistry, we’re proud to offer three types of sedation dentistry and our trained and experienced professionals can help you choose the right choice for you and your sedation needs. Our sedation options include:
Inhalation sedation: Nitrous oxide, or better known as “laughing gas,” is administered to the patient through an inhaler that is placed over the nose. You don’t have to do anything except breathe it in, and the medication will take effect. Patients report few side effects and this sedation method keeps the patient calm without putting him or her in a completely relaxed state.
Oral sedation: A sedation medication is prescribed to the patient, which he or she takes orally before arriving to the appointment. Because of the nature of this method, the patient needs to be driven to and from the appointment by a family member or friend. Another dose is administered before the procedure begins as well. This is an excellent choice if the patient prefers to be sedated but prefers not to use intravenous sedation due to fear of needles.
Intravenous sedation: With this method, the patient is administered the sedative intravenously. You’re not completely asleep during the procedure, but you’ll probably feel refreshed afterwards and have no memory or recollection of what happened. Dr. Djawdan is the only dentist in Annapolis who offers this form of sedation.
What Does It Feel Like?
Most patients report that they felt happy, relaxed, and experienced less anxiety and stress during sedation. It’s very common to feel like you’re asleep, but in reality, you’re just in an extremely relaxed state. Some patients even report that they wake up feeling euphoric and completely rejuvenated. This is completely opposite reaction for patients who normally struggle with intense fear and anxiety related to dental cleanings, treatments, and procedures.
Will I Be in Control?
Some patients are afraid that they’ll be too relaxed to communicate if they’re scared or experiencing stress. With intravenous and inhalation sedation, the intensity of the sedative can be adjusted if the patient is experiencing too much or would like more of the sedative. You will be able to respond to commands and questions during your sedation, and our professional staff will carefully monitor you and make sure that you’re comfortable during your treatment. If there are any complications, Dr. Djawdan and his staff will be in complete control and take excellent care of you.
If you’re afraid of the dentist, but still need to make an appointment for a crucial treatment or procedure, Dr Djawdan and his staff at the Djawdan Center for Implant and Restorative Dentistry in Annapolis, Maryland is the choice for you. Take care of yourself and your dental health and make an appointment today!
