Bone Grafts Could Boost Your Oral Health

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Kian Djawdan DMD
Bone Grafts Could Boost Your Oral HealthIf you need a bone graft, it is because you don't have enough bone to support implants. If you have lost bone density and volume because of a gum infection, advanced decay, or from a treatment, such as chemotherapy, you can greatly benefit from bone graft surgery.

How Does a Basic Bone Graft Work?

A bone graft, in simple terms, is a bone transplant. We may extract bone from another area of the body or from the mouth and place it where the bone needs to develop and grow. This type of grafting procedure is known as an autogenous bone graft. We may also use a synthetic material at the bone loss site for bone renewal and growth. A bone graft material called a xenograft is taken from the bones of cows while allogenic grafts come from cadavers.

Where are Bone Grafts Placed?

Bone grafts may be placed in alveolar sockets after a tooth removal or used to refill a bony defect that occurs from infection or trauma. They may also be used to refill a peri-implant site due to peri-implantitis (implant failure) or to augment the bone of the mandible (lower jaw bone) or maxilla (upper jaw bone) vertically or horizontally. After a tooth extraction, up to 60 percent of the height and width of the adjacent alveolar bone is reduced, usually after the first 2 years. To minimize alveolar bone atrophy, we may fill the socket with a bone or substitute material to preserve the bone and get it ready to receive implants.

Ridge Preservation

To preserve the ridge volume, ridge preservation procedures prove effective in delaying ridge atrophy after a tooth extraction and prevents the need to do further grafting later. Anytime we add bone to increase bone density, osteogenesis or the formation of new bone occurs, thereby making bone grafting good for a patient's overall oral health and well-being.

Would you like to know more about bone grafting surgery? After we examine your bone and determine the amount of bone loss, we can go over the procedure in more detail. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment and exam for an exam and consultation.
