Common Myths About Dental Implants
Posted on 2/6/2020 by Kian Djawdan DMD
Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and allow you to speak, chew, and smile confidently again. However, there are some barriers between patients and the treatment they want and need due to misinformation. Below are some common myths and misconceptions debunked!

Myth #1: Dental implants are painful

While there may be some pressure or discomfort during the procedure, dental implant surgery is actually not as bad as you may think! Local anesthetics will numb the area so you will not experience any pain, and there is only minor swelling during healing. We also offer conscious IV sedation for any procedure, so you don't even have to be awake for the appointment. Most patients tell us they are very surprised to experience such an easy process compared to what they had expected prior to their visit.

Myth #2: Dental implants are expensive

Dental implants are more of an investment upfront, but are well worth it. Traditional crowns and bridges typically last 7-10 years, while dental implants can last much longer. Dr. Djawdan has been placing dental implants for over 20 years and those first patients still have them to this day! We will assist you with your at home oral hygiene routine to ensure you maximize the health and longevity of your implants.

Myth #3: Dental implants look fake

On the contrary! Every restoration made in our in-office lab is created with the utmost care and detailing, specifically made for that individual. There is no "one-size-fits-all" or cookie cutter template for our crowns, bridges, and fixed arches. Dr. Djawdan personally handles all permanent restorations, along with our certified dental lab technician, to ensure you have the most natural-looking restoration. Your friends might not even believe it's not your natural tooth!

Myth #4: I was told I can't get dental implants

There are very few people that truly aren't a candidate for dental implants due to various health concerns, but most people are able to successfully have dental implants placed to restore their smile. If you suffer from bone loss, there are different methods of bone grafting that provide enough support and stabilization for implant placement.

Myth #5: Any dentist can place dental implants

Technically, yes. However, you want to see someone who has extensive training and experience in placing dental implants. Some dentists don't look at the bigger picture and how the implant placement will effect the permanent restoration (tooth) that is usually made by another dentist. Dr. Djawdan not only is certified by the American Board of Implantology, but also fabricates the restoration so we can ensure the entire treatment is set up for success.

Myth #6: Dental implants are unsafe

There are risks associated with any surgical procedure, however we assess any and all risks for your particular needs before any treatment is done. Dental implants have a 98% success rate and are considered to have the highest success rate of any dental procedure. Dental implants also stop bone loss and restore proper chewing, leading to overall optimal oral health and a better diet.
