What Types of Dental Implants Are There?

Posted on 6/2/2025 by Djawdan Center
Whether you're missing one tooth or several, dental implants can provide a permanent and natural-looking solution. But with so many different types available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Let's break down the different types of dental implants to help you understand your options and make an informed decision.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type and are surgically implanted into the jawbone. They come in two main varieties:

•  Root Form Implants: These are the most widely used type and resemble the shape of a tooth root. They are typically made of titanium and are surgically inserted into the jawbone.
•  Plate Form Implants: These implants are broader and flatter, resembling a small plate. They are typically used when the jawbone is not thick enough for a root form implant.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jawbone, beneath the gum tissue. This type is less common than endosteal implants and is typically used when the jawbone is not strong enough to support an endosteal implant.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional implants and are anchored in the cheekbone. They are used when the upper jawbone is severely compromised and cannot support other types of implants.

Choosing the Right Type of Implant

The best type of dental implant for you will depend on several factors, including the condition of your jawbone, the number of teeth you are missing, and your overall oral health. Your oral surgeon will work with you to determine the best option for your individual needs.

Considerations for Dental Implants

Dental implants require a significant commitment, both in terms of time and money. The implant process can take several months, and the cost can vary depending on the type of implant and the complexity of the procedure.

Here are some additional things to consider before getting dental implants:

•  Your overall health: If you have certain health conditions, such as diabetes or osteoporosis, you may not be a good candidate for dental implants.
•  Your oral hygiene: You must be committed to good oral hygiene to keep your implants healthy and prevent infection.
•  Smoking: Smoking can increase the risk of implant failure. If you smoke, you will need to quit before you can get dental implants.

Making the Right Choice

Choosing the right type of dental implant is an important decision. By understanding the different types available and the factors that influence your choice, you can work with your oral surgeon to select the best option for your individual needs. Remember, dental implants are a long-term investment in your oral health and well-being.
