Teeth in a Day

Annapolis, Maryland

Implant dentistry is the cutting edge of reconstructive dental medicine. For people who have lost a tooth, nothing could be better than to have that tooth back, and implant dentistry allows that to happen. When you receive a dental implant you can act as though you have your tooth again, unlike dentures and even bridges which have significant dietary restrictions. Dental implants have traditionally had only one major drawback: you were required to wait three to six months for the synthetic root implant to integrate into your jawbone before the final functional prosthetic was placed on it. Now, however, thanks to the Teeth in a Day procedure, you can have fully functional dental implants in one day.

Why Wait?

When root-style dental implants were first invented by Professor Brånemark, the practices for osseointegration, the incorporation of the implant into the jawbone, included a significant resting period. The theory was that the implant needed a period of undisturbed healing. Although Professor Brånemark’s practices were revolutionary and successfully led to a properly integrated implant, several variables that Brånemark considered crucial to the process have since been determined to have been over-cautious and not necessary at all. One of these is the undisturbed waiting period. Research initiated by the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine has since proven that dental implants can be effectively put in place and utilized immediately without waiting for osseointegration in some cases.

How is it done?

Your Teeth in a Day procedure begins with the removal of any damaged teeth to be replaced, periodontal disease, and/or infected tissue around the implant site.

Then a custom drill is used to prepare a hole for the implant that allows it to enter securely without damaging the jawbone.

Then the implants are placed in the bone and fitted with cosmetic semi-permanent crowns that appear and function like natural teeth. After the implant is fully integrated into the jawbone, stronger, final crowns are placed atop the root implants.

Who is eligible?

Not everyone is eligible for Teeth in a Day. Sometimes it is preferable to wait until full osseointegration has occurred before placing a functional crown atop the root. This is true for people who need to have molars, the teeth in the back of the mouth, replaced. Molars are subject to greater stresses than your front teeth and therefore could be worked loose during chewing if not sufficiently integrated. It is not as crucial, though, that your back teeth be replaced as quickly, since they are not as visible during smiling and speaking.
