How Does Osteoporosis Impact Dental Implants?

More often than not, people with missing teeth may have challenges receiving their dental implants. The reason is that they may have poor bone density in their jaw. Osteoporosis can impact the process of mounting dental implants. Perhaps you want to know if you can get dental implants if you have osteoporosis.

Dental Implants and Osteoporosis

Although osteoporosis tends to affect major bones like the femur, it is possible for the condition to affect other body areas, including the jawbone. It causes the bones to be porous and weak. Our jawbones are meant to secure the teeth in place. As such, they are an important component in placing dental implants and how they work.

Osseointegration of Implants

Dental implants have to bond and fuse with the metal posts before the crown or a bridge is mounted. It is a process referred to as osseointegration. People with osteoporosis have problems with osseointegration. Their bone density is usually low and frail. A dentist or oral surgeon may not recommend implants in people with poor jawlines. However, if there are no other options for replacing teeth for these people, then treatment may be offered to help replenish the bone density prior to implant placement.

How an Oral Surgeon Can Treat Jawbone Osteoporosis

People taking medication to prevent bone resorption may have a risk of a more serious condition known as osteonecrosis. This condition can contribute to severe jawbone damage. For moderate cases of the condition, an oral surgeon can offer treatment to help prepare the jawbone for dental implants.

You may need to postpone your osteoporosis medication to allow the dental surgeon to assess your jawline. Bone rebuilding may be conducted first before implant placement. It also helps avoid the onset of osteonecrosis.

Further, an oral surgeon may suggest minimally invasive implants such as mini dental implants. Again, removable restorations like dentures may be considered. Since osteonecrosis can be very painful and tends to harm the mouth, the dental surgeon may treat the condition and perform bone grafts as well. Other treatments may include osteotomies and core decompression surgical procedures.

Let us assess your need for implants and any condition that may impact the process. Our oral surgeon is ready to help with the right treatment for optimal results.
