Dental Implants

Serving Maryland in Annapolis and Surrounding Areas

IMAGINE.  A life without dentures.

“Teeth in a day” is a wonderful alternative to an ill-fitting denture.  Historically, patients with an ill-fitting denture seeking an alternative are often sadly disappointed to learn that the alternative required several dental surgeries over the course of 9-12 months.  First graft bone, wait a few months, place dental implants, wait a few months, then fabricate the new crown and bridge or over denture supported by the dental implants.

How does “teeth in a day” work? With a digital CT scan taken right here in our Annapolis, Maryland office, Dr. Djawdan uses 3-D imaging software to visualize the placement of dental implants and then designs a surgical guide.  Diagnostic impressions bite registrations and pictures will be sent to our neuromuscular prosthetic lab to fabricate your new teeth.  In a few weeks, you will return and while under IV sedation, Dr. Djawdan will use the surgical guide to place your dental implants and seat your new teeth.  Most patients find that they are able to eat and speak with a confidence they have not experienced in years the very next day.

Natural Chewing Power

Article By: Kian Djawdan, DMD, FICOI

Recent studies have shown that denture wearers take nearly 20 percent more medication for gastrointestinal disorder, then what people with a natural chewing ability are forced to take for the same disorder. This is due to the loss of biting power. Dentures cannot make up for the bone stimulation that natural teeth provide.

Every time a person chews food with their “natural teeth”, the roots of the teeth provide stimulation to the jawbone, (beneath the gums). When you lose your natural teeth, your jawbone is no longer receiving this vital stimulation, even when you replace them with fixed bridge work, partial dentures or full denture plates.

Without the necessary stimulation to your jawbone, you lose density and the bone slowly shrinks and becomes smaller and smaller over time. This vicious cycle is similar to the effects of Osteoporosis. Bone requires being stimulated to maintain its form.

In the first year alone, following the removal of a tooth, the width of the jawbone in the area where the tooth is removed will decrease by 25 percent. Think what it would be like to lose 25 percent of your hipbone over the course of one year. Can you imagine how severely this would affect the way you walk, the way you golf, and the way you exercise or the way you sit?

Fortunately today there is a solution available that will not only replace your missing teeth, but one that will also maintain your remaining bone density and volume just like your natural teeth once did. Bone preservation and teeth stabilization is the ideal solution.

This method of replacing missing teeth is called implant dentistry. And from 1983 to 2004, implant dentistry has increased tenfold and is now considered the fastest growing segment of modern dentistry. The process… “In my practice, I surgically and painlessly place dental implants beneath the gum of my patients in the same area that their natural teeth roots once occupied before they were removed. We then place a crown on top of the implant(s). Not only does this method look and feel natural, but also it mimics the dynamics of natural teeth.

Every time a person bites down with dental implants in place, the jawbone now receives the vital bone stimulation required to maintain its shape, form and function that the natural tooth once provided. Dental implants make it possible for patients with missing teeth to once again enjoy the simple pleasure of biting on a nice raw carrot, an apple, chewing a steak and thoroughly enjoying it while benefiting from the nutritional value that these foods provide."

What is the cost of implant treatment?

An investment in dental implant treatment is an investment in overall health, appearance and well being, as it involves preserving the integrity of facial structures, as well as replacing missing teeth.
The actual cost of implant treatment is based on a number of factors, such as the number of teeth being replaced, the type of implant supported teeth (treatment option) recommended and whether additional procedures are necessary to achieve the proper esthetic and functional result.

There is often a misconception that there is a set cost for each implant. The fees are calculated based on the amount of time the we anticipate spending to complete treatment (implant placement, other surgical procedures, fabrication of replacement teeth…) as well as the estimated cost of implants, other components and materials necessary to complete treatment and dental laboratory fees.  The fee for “teeth in a day” ranges $15,000 to $18,000 per arch.

Question: Will My Insurance Pay for Implants?

The extent of your coverage will depend on your individual plan and the implant benefits included. Very few dental insurance plans cover implants placement; however, fabrication of the replacement teeth is often partially covered up to your annual maximum (the average annual benefit for most dental plans is $1,500.00).
